The title of this post comes from “Dust Bowl Dance” a song by a band Mumford & Sons. If you have never heard of these guys before, today is your lucky day. Mumford &Sons is a quartet from West London bringing us there own edge on classic style folk music. Im going to go ahead and say this is a must buy album, every song is good. Even people who arent into folk can get into these guys, they are unbelievable musicians and have epic style lyrics to follow. The song that got us hooked was “Little Lion Man” but, after giving the whole album a listen we couldnt pick a favorite…. but “Dust Bowl Dance” is near the top, starts slow and ends loud. (i dont usually do reviews because i suck at putting things on paper but sometimes i get excited when i hear shiz like this!)

For your Audio and Visual Pleasure: ”Little Lion Man”

The Internet reflected a horizontal move in the distribution in music. To define the Internet for the current generation would be redundant. Its influence has permeated almost every aspect of human culture in a remarkably short period of time. Its influence on music is no exception. In 2009 Times Magazine article, Greg Kot discusses the changing face of the music industry. “For years, the music industry was confined to four multinational corporations that dominated the revenue stream of 70% of the music coming in…Now all that has been broken up into millions and millions of little pieces and subcultures and niches that are serving small, really dedicated communities of music lovers” In his article he continues to elaborate on the advent of “niches” serving a healthy appetite for music.
Some may believe that audiences have changed. It has been a reoccurring theme for music industry critics to blame the influence of “instant gratification” provided by the Internet. Kot is quick to repute such claims. Unlike music distribution in the contemporary context, record companies had grown too large and harnessed too much control over the direction of music. With a monopoly on this aspect of the industry, this circle of influence under these major labels could see no limitations regarding how much they could charge consumers as well as controlling what music found it’s way into popular culture. The age of illegal downloads and free music is the only necessary conclusion to the stranglehold of influence held by this elite class of music distributers.
Although it may seem heroic to stick it to the big, bad record companies after their reign of terror, there were some benefits to their influence. For one, Artists were guaranteed credit and recognition for their work. They were also compensated for the money their music made. Lastly, record companies were able to convince consumers to purchase entire albums. Albums and Album Artwork would take a backseat to the digital age of mass chaos and “pirating” music. The questions arrive begging weather this new wave of accessibility would foster or diminish the sanctity of the artist and it’s applications in music. The answer lies in an assimilation of the resources we already have.
Consumers, though not always completely informed, have not changed. If one were to take consumer’s wants and desires from today’s generation and compare them to their predecessors, one would most likely find they aren’t very different. Consumers are also smart enough to recognize what they believe something is worth. Today’s music industry has taken foreword-thinking steps to begin to not change, but rather adapt to the growing trends.
Musicians have begun reverting to previously used technologies such as vinyl as a means to add value to their product. In many ways this makes perfect sense. Why would consumers buy music they could easily find for free? The answer lies in adding value through cultural capital. Consumers are no longer paying just for the music, but also the experience of hearing music in its purest form of “analog” recording. Listeners are also paying for the experience of holding an album and soaking in the history it has endured. Combining new age technologies with the value of historical context could pave the way for a cultural revolution. “As an extra lure, many labels are including coupons for free audio downloads with their vinyl albums so that Generation Y music fans can get the best of both worlds: high-quality sound at home and iPod portability for the road.”
The growing accessibility of music has been a reoccurring theme throughout history. Music in society today is no exception. Whether through mass production of sheet music throughout the 1700’s or even the chaotic scramble for unauthorized downloads of the new millennium, the growth in society’s wealth of experience of music has shared in no deficit. In today’s world, for the first time in history, independent artists stand a chance in the global market. Consumers today can find and listen to music from seemingly endless genres with a few clicks of their mouse. The growth in community of listeners fuels the spread of knowledge, adding to the development of music as a precursor towards a continued tradition of innovation and development.

It’s Saturday, February 6th 2010. It’s around 1 am in Greenwich Village, downtown, New York City. I make up exactly 1/7 of the audience in the basement of the Comedy Corner; a stones throw from Bleecker street. The stage is about 5 feet wide and a single strand of Christmas lights adds a decorative touch to the generator protruding from the cold stonewalls. I’m nursing a warm beer from the tap, listening to the host describe his most recent hallucination from his current acid trip. In his rare moments of audible clarity, the audience learns about his four-year degree in psychology from a reputable institution. He then sarcastically describes finally achieving his dreams of becoming a professional comedian as he pokes an invisible audience member in the front row with his mic stand between his legs, alluding to obscene gestures, in complete disconnect with his audience.
The struggling artist is in no way a new idea. In certain ways, some artists would describe the entire profession as a constant struggle to keep from sinking while picking which battles of artistic integrity they should choose to fight. For the comedians at the comedy corner, the bar for such integrity was set remarkably low. One female comedian casually flirted me into staying for her next set, while others offered free beers from behind the bar in an effort to keep the miniature audience satisfied.
The lack of an audience became the punch line for a majority of the jokes for the comedians who performed. Behind wall of sarcasm, a dark eerie quality of bleak misfortune seemed to be a reoccurring theme for the performers. In moments of extended pause, one could almost feel the comedians asking themselves, “how did it end up like this?” The reality of the situation was that all four were talented performers and I thoroughly enjoyed each of their fifteen minutes under the lonely stage light.
I left the comedy club in a fog. It was either the sheer perplexity of the oddness of the show I had just experienced, or (as I thought more likely) someone had managed to slip something in my drink. Regardless, as I found the myself submerged in the densely occupied streets of Greenwich Village , an imminent reality began to set it. I began asking myself mountainous questions such as “what the hell am I going to do in two years when I graduate?” and “how did such interesting people, find such misfortunate plights?”
The current economic crisis is a reality one will meet everyday in the news and television. However, as college students, how is one affected directly? Personally, the financial sting has gone unnoticed. I sympathize with anyone who may disagree, however my life hasn’t changed. I still work at the same beach I’ve worked at for the last 4 years. My paycheck has steadily increased annually and I had my most successful year yet last summer. Every morning I stop at the same cornerstone, order my breakfast sandwich and a coffee and begin my daily routine of saving lives and tanning. I would ask myself, “what is everyone so worried about?”
My trip to New York answered a number of questions. For one, a Four-year degree doesn’t mean anything until you use it. How people market themselves is going to be the deciding factor for many graduates. Although it’s advised that majors such as nursing and accounting provide job security, finding our niche is going to land you the positions you want. Like the struggling artist, we also need to know where we’re going to draw the line; how far we are willing to push our moral standards to achieve success. Students must also rely on their own self-efficiency and constantly bulk up their resume with programs, internships, and even those “showed up once” group memberships if necessary. The struggling artist can in many ways serve as an example to us that nothing is a sure thing anymore. As students, we must prepare for success as equally as failure. For those graduating, I offer my supreme confidence in your education as well as offer my prayers for their continued growth in the spirit of learning and maturity.

In Washington DC, MGMT took the stage to the warm applause of a private show as the bands presence broke the anticipation. Andrew VanWyngarden, lead singer and guitarist staggered between his amplifier and the microphone as he tuned his final notes over the hum of energy leaking from the crowd. Ben Goldwasser could be seen stage right, standing behind his keyboard, waiting for his counterpart to address the crowd. The lights dawned on the modestly dressed Andrew, wearing a flannel shirt, noticeably without his trademark headband. Ben Goldwasser looked like Andrew’s nerdy counterpart sporting wide frame glasses and neatly pressed collared shirt and tie. As Andrew addressed the crowd, he asked “would you like to hear the title track off our new record, or our hit single Kids?” The crowd erupted at the ladder option as Andrew turned to laugh with his band as if the crowd had made the disappointing decision. Against the crowds decision, the band opened their show with the their new title track, “Congratulations”. The only problem was, the album hadn’t been released yet. Some of those crazy stalker type fans might already know about how the album leaked on the Internet far before it’s release on April 9th. If you couldn’t find the songs, MGMT was one step ahead of you. Instead of trying to ignore the preemptive release, MGMT gave audiences their album free to listen to. Their website offered free listening privileges for the entire album. I personally spent that entire first day in the library so I could have smooth streaming internet without gaps throughout each track. For the superficial MGMT fan, this album is not that easy to listen to. In their last album Oracular Spectacular, MGMT was able to ride the success of such synth poppy hits such as “Time to Pretend” and “Kids”. Oracular Spectacular had it’s introspective independent hits, but for the most part, MGMT was able to keep your attention. Congratulations is a great album, but it does lack it’s stand out hits. The first track “It’s Working” has a great B-Side beach boy’s /Morrissey vibe, but lacks structure. To a certain degree, this lack of structure is what will loose their larger audiences who devoured their remix-able hits. I’m sure the band never wanted such a broad scope of college, dance happy followers, and this album could almost weed out the “non believers” in truly independent rock. Another song that sticks out of this album is the fifth track “I found a Whistle”. Played in a bold four chord, Bob Dylan type progression, the song describes the metaphoric whistle as the escape hatch for the writers life, rescuing him moments after he decides he actually doesn’t want to hang himself. “ Flash Delirium” could rival the unstructured spontaneity of Canada’s experimental rock band Of Montreal. The video for Flash Delirium speaks for the album’s purpose as well, watching as Ben Goldwasser has an “electric eel” ripped from his throat, possibly symbolizing their evolution as a band. We probably won’t be hearing Girl Talk remix these new songs, but it’s a great album nonetheless. I’d strongly recommend a solid pair of headphones, maybe a glass of wine and a long sit down with the freely available new album. It’s refreshing to see bands who can not only redefine themselves, but also risk their own success through simplifying their sound and finding their true roots

Album Review: The White Stripes: Under the Great White Northern Lights

In 2007, the White stripes embarked on a massive live tour, playing free concerts in every facet of our neighbors to the north, Canada. After three years since, the White Stripes had remained silent and their status had since been questioned concerning whether or not they would ever tour again. After Meg White canceled the last tour due to anxiety attacks, Jack White has since kept himself very busy with other bands such as The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather. Last week, in promotion of a new live DVD release, the duo released their first album in over three years. Under the Great White Northern Lights recorded from the Savoy Theatre on 7-14-07, reiterates the White Stripes we all know and loved. The White Stripes are renowned for their live shows, and this record is no different. Jack White’s ripping, boundless presence erupts through songs such as Blue Orchid and Ball and Biscuit. Meg Whites ominous yet necessary balance to the overwhelming energy of her faux brother/ex husband , adds to the oddity and mysteriously awesome nature that the White Stripes have used as a platform for success. For someone who loves live music, and doesn’t know The White Stripes all that well, please go buy this album. If you’re a steady White Stripes fan, you might see this album as unnecessary. These aren’t new tracks, they’re the songs that made The White Stripes famous. It’s discerning to see after three years, the only thing the duo is putting out is live CD’s and DVD’s from old concerts. One hopes that this doesn’t mark the capstone to a band that revolutionized the idea of a band. Not only does this live CD, challenge the capacity of your headphones, but it’s easily forgotten that theirs only two people playing. One can only hope this is marking the end of the old error of The Whites Stripes in preparation for the new age of amplified southern rock to come.

The classic and almost legendary story of Where The Wild Things Are finally made it’s debut on the big screen this past fall and had a mix of criticms regarding the children’s story to movie adaptation. The movie was directed by Grammy Award Winning Spike Jonze and his raw Indie movie feel makes the movie really come to life. I feel he was the perfect person to do this movie because of his style of directing and taste in music for the soundtrack that really added emotion to the storyline. I know this movie didn’t get the reaction most people expected but to turn a short children’s story into a hour and forty minute movie isn’t an easy task so obviously some filler scenes are added to make some more drama to the movie. The soundtrack really sets the mood of the movie and expresses alot of what’s going on with instrumental Indie rock music. The music was made by Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s and she recruited many indie rock artists to come in the studio to create music for each scene, a huge plus to this movie! If you were a fan of the book growing up then I highly suggest seeing this movie because I really enjoyed watching the tale come to life and realized just how sad and real the story is compared to some children’s books. If you were deprived as a child from reading this book then here is the crash course of what happens.

The story starts off with a very imaginative boy named Max who most of the time is just playing by himself creating fictious stories in his mind to have an adventure. He wears a homemade wolf costume when he pretends to be an animal and runs around his house causing ruckus. He gets annoyed when his mother isn’t paying attention to him because of her new boyfriend and decides to act up and try and get her to play with him. He stands on the dinner table yelling “Feed me Woman!” and gets his mother annoyed to the point that she picks him up and yells at him, but Max gets annoyed and bites her like an animal to the point that she screams at him to go to his room. Max runs away crying from home as his mother is upset and chases after him, he goes into a fake world he creates for himself and sails a small boat to a place where the wild things are. He lands and meets interesting creatures who are at first hostile to him until he conquers them by saying he is a king who has conquered things much bigger then them. This contrasts with the book in that he runs to his room instead where he makes things up and stares down the monsters to tame them instead but it’s more dramatic in the movie so hence the running away from home. He starts doing animal type things with all the Wild Things and creates a close friendship with the fiercest one Carol who accepts him as a king until Max and him get in an argument. Both of the characters are parallel’s to each other in that they feel different from everyone and almost lonely and this causes them to conflict at the end of the story. Feeling lonely and sad about what he has done, Max feels he should let them be and that he should go back home. Carol chases after him as he sails away and gives out a roar as if he’s saying sorry and Max roars back as Carol watches Max sail away with both tears in their eyes. Max returns finding his supper still ready for him and hugs his mom in apology for what he has done to nicely end the movie. The book and movie are different in many aspects but the plot is still the same so I’d have to say I really enjoyed the adaptation despite the many differences.
