Thrice on Daytrotter

Thrice

Thrice has recently done a Daytrotter session in which they played three new songs off their Beggars album and a cover of a Tom Waits song.  The band stated on their website that the songs were stripped down versions of the songs and would be a decent download for any fans who enjoy different versions of their favorite songs.  The songs  being recorded are the songs “All The World Is Mad”,  “Circles” and “Beggars” as well as the unannounced Tom Waits cover.  It should be interesting hearing the songs “Circles” and “Beggars” since the songs are already stripped down on the record and couldn’t possibly be more raw.  For anybody who doesn’t know Tom Waits he is a phenominal song writer who influenced people like Rod Stewart and Bruce Springsteen and most people cover his songs because of his Bluesy Folk style of story telling.  Thrice frontman Dustin Kensrue has apparantly been increasingly influenced by him over the years and the song “Beggars” sounds like an early Tom Waits song that was more blues oriented.

What I love about the Daytrotter Sessions besides them being free is the shear analysis of the band’s music by the reviewer as well as the lovely water color painting of the band they include with the download.  What I found great about Thrice’s Daytrotter is how in depth Dustin Kensrue gets about what his lyrics mean and where they intially stem from, in this case it ranges from Martin Luther to writer G.K. Chesterton.  The more I listen to their new album “Beggars” the more I love this band and for anybody who really isn’t a fan of the band in the past may enjoy the enormous transformation they have endured by dropping the emo-core sound completely and focusing on a more Blues-Indie rock vibe.  Either way the link is below to the session that finally has been posted.
