State of the Union Address

January 28th, 2010

Last night was President Obama’s first State of the Union Address after a year of taking office as the President of the United States.  It was a big one considering he has been declining in public opinion polls the past several months on whether or not he has been doing an effective job as President.  It was actually interesting to watch considering he can actually speak well compared to the last President but each speech is the same and they all still say the same old bullshit that everyone wants to hear,  I just hope he’s serious.  He spoke how we still need work on healthcare reform and help the economy by stimulating jobs and stopping the corruption from happening again on Wall Street.   Obviously the problem in Haiti is a huge concern, considering they are a neighboring country who has dealt with nothing but hardships this past decade and that America isn’t selfish and will help out a weak country in need.  Besides these various hot subjects  to his credit he did admit to some mistakes him and his administration had made throughout the first year and talked about how they would fix them and move on in the coming year.

The main concern of his speech is the obvious one, which most people don’t get is that the nation is divided completely on opinions on how we should focus our concerns and our administration can’t get anything passed because everyone is stubborn on what they vote for.  Republicans won’t vote for something because their party doesn’t traditionally vote Yes on things like healthcare reform and government regulation and instead of voting for something that is needed and maybe they believe in, they vote No to stay loyal to the party and save face.  Democrats are equally guilty of the same thing and everyone is concerned since the winning of Scott Brown has led to the Republicans stripping Democrats majority in the Senate and means the Republicans will be able to block most Democratic legislation.  Is this really good for our country?  I saw plenty of people on facebook and blogs raving how Obama is in trouble now and that the right things can finally get done.  How can something get done now?  The President is trying to make this country come back from what is probably the most horrible recession (depression) since the The Great One.  How can anything get passed if nobody can agree on anything and both sides of the country can’t come to an agreement on how we should fix this country?  Yet people are cheering they are back in the Senate and can finally get things done, I’m sorry but unfortunately this isn’t FDR’s era and politics work much differently now.  Interest groups have parties by the balls and nobody is going to vote for something if their wallet gets lighter or they think government regulation is gonna turn this country into 1950′s USSR.  If anybody really thinks this country would turn Socialist over night because government is regulating corrupt business then they obviously don’t know their history since FDR did the exact same thing the first time around.

I personally  am all for Obama still and I know he means well and wants this country to be better and unfortunately he was put in the toughest position anybody could be put in.  Eight years of a selfish Republican who the Republicans seem to ignore was ever in office has caused corruption to occur on Wall Street, waisted billions on a War, allowed banks to run wild, ignored people in New Orleans and in a whole, let this country go to shit and bowed out gracefully to his predecessor.  The truth is most people predicted that the economy would start climbing back by now but everybody miscalculated especially the all mighty source of information, the media.  I just don’t see how anybody can turn on the President after only a year in office where he has given 8 years of damage to work with.  I’m all for President Obama still and if things don’t get better by his 3rd year then maybe we should point the finger at him but until then I think we should stop our bitching and whining and start working on solutions.
