I’ve recently become obsessed with this band more and more over the past year and was extremely ecstatic that I was able to get an advance listen of their newest release and debut on Sub Pop entitled Teen Dream. Where the word “Teen” doesn’t exactly describe the album, the word “Dream” certainly does with the band’s continuation on sleepy and ambient melodies is backed by beautiful soft spoken lyrics. The band has come into it’s own on this album and I believe it’s their finest work to date considering their is some range in their songs now with more pop or sass added to their songs that don’t make them all so “sleepy” sounding. I would listen to this album at anytime of the year and could find the perfect scenario for each song to soundtrack my day. What makes this album different from many other albums is that it actually comes with a DVD of music video’s specially done for each song, which makes it all the more reason to actually purchase this album physically.
The album starts off with the standard style intro song in “Zebra” which is a nice taste and transition into this album from their last and sets the stage for what is to come. I really enjoy the follow up songs “Silver Soul” and “Norway” which have that patented Beach House sound but a little more upbeatness to them that let’s the songs really take flight. Especially with “Norway” which has this catchy exhaling sound that lead singer Victoria Legrand does while it bridges into the next verse. Probably my favorite song on the album is the song “Walk In The Park” which digresses a little from their previous album Devotion and has more of a catch to it then the rest of the songs, almost a sleepy pop tune that you can’t get out of your dreams. The track “Used To Be” was released from the band on a 7″ when they first signed to Sub Pop and is actually still on of the more solid songs on the album and as a whole every song is pretty much perfect and I expect this album to blow away critics. The album finishes on a solid with the song “Take Care” as if they’re telling the listener to take care and to enjoy the rest of their day after the listening of the album which I certainly will.
