I have read some interesting blogs and articles over the past week regarding this past decade of music, especially the second half of it. Every decade has it’s defining genre of music that predominates like the 70′s had that classic rock sound such as Led Zeppelin, Bob Segar and The Eagles. The 80′s were known for that New Wave sound and “Monster Metal” bands such as The Smiths, Duran Duran, Bon Jovi and Motley Crue. The 90′s had it’s period of Grunge music that somehow led into that Nu Metal/Rap MEtal phase that I am certainly guitly of indulging in with bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden, Korn and Limp Bizkit. It’s no surprise what dominated this past decade the ever made fun of and loved Post Hardcore or Emo scene if you want to be a dick about it.
Either way it’s been the fad as of the past four years and bands that were originally in underground “Emo” type bands have disbanded and formed these Crunkcore bands and Dance Pop blend bands that immediately get gobbled up by major labels. While I’ve been substituting at my local high school I notice the young kids rocking Nike Air Force One’s, Extra Tight Jeans, long banged hair and an obnoxious neon colored shirt of their favorite Dance Pop Crunkcore Rock band. I actually can’t believe some of the music the kid’s listen to because most of them are into bands that have only recently come out and are only playing music that is popular right now. I’m looking at 3Oh3!,The Devil Wears Prada, Cobra Starship, The Maine and other terrible over synthed bands who mix their bubble gum high school drama with Pet Shop Boys beats.
What I’m really getting at is that is this just another phase? Or is it the beginning of a new revolution of music that will just evolve into the next frontier? If I may add my opinion, I feel these are just newcoming 80′s one hit wonders or the Limp Bizkit’s of 2009 because their is no depth behind the music and no real lasting appeal. The one scene who seems to be the most safe and always has been is the Indie rock scene who has bands that are their because they get the freedom to play music they want and have no interest of making 16 year old girls cry in concert. I’ll even name drop from the 80′s, BOOM!, Sonic Youth a band that still puts out music today and plays concerts who was the standard for do it yourself music. They did have their short stint on a major label in the 90′s but the music still wasn’t the norm for that era and they have been playing the same distorted experimental rock for years. Other bands who have lasted a long time due to depth and intellect in their music is Mudhoney, Pavement, Modest Mouse, Built To Spill, The Pixies and so on. That is just a few from the generic Indie rock genre and I haven’t even broken into the heavy music genre or “Emo” genre of bands who influence the crap thats selling today. It’s just something that is interesting to look at and anyone who has input on the scene today and what they think may come of it, speak now or forever hold your peace, at least till the next big thing. This is what is hot on the streets right now it’s from a lovely band called Brokencyde.

Thank u
