I haven’t had the dismay yet of listening to Weezer’s new album Raditude but just from the looks of the album cover and the names of the tracks, I’m pretty sure I’ll save myself. I was talking to a friend of mine who is a big time Weezer fan, especially their Blue Album and most notably the cult favorite Pinkerton and he said “There is nothing cool about that album.” He said every track is over produced pop garbage with cheesy lyrics and non-sensical cameos that just add more cheese to the album title and cover art. This led me to research what the critics had to say about the album so I decided to go to Spin.com and read the album review from one of their top critics and wasn’t surprised by his comments. He stated this album is almost insane how bad it is and he wouldn’t be surprised if it was on purpose because Rivers Cuomo for years has been disgusted that hardcore Weezer fans worship the Pinkerton album which for some reason he is embarrassed by. Not many people really know why he disgusts the album so much but for some reason, according to the Spin writer, he feels that Cuomo purposely made this album as a slap in the face to hardcore Weezer fans that they will never come close to listening to anything like Pinkerton. I guess this is Cuomo’s way of saying fuck you to his most loyal fans and discrediting his musical ability by putting out drum machine tracks with terrible lyrics.
I guess this is my “album review” of the week even though you can’t really call it that since I didn’t personally review the album, but I would like to analyze this a little bit because I can’t understand how somebody can be so upset that their hardcore fans enjoy an album of his so much even if he doesn’t like that it was ever put out. I am not a huge Weezer fan and to be honest I really only enjoy the Blue Album, Pinkerton, “Hashpipe” (off Green Album) and their most recent “Pork And Beans” (off Red Album). I don’t know what happened to Rivers Cuomo over the years and why he drastically made changes to Weezer but they have things called side projects now a days that you can branch off your music interests in other bands by not ruining your original bands sound. I feel bad and respect Weezer fans at the same time because you really do have to be loyal to listen to this band over the years. If you want to listen to one of the best videos of the 90′s check out classic shiz from yesterday, it’s Weezer’s “Buddy Holly”.
