I came across this interesting article pertaining to a drop in artists paying for producers and studio time and just doing it themselves. Nowadays we are so technology rich it is everywhere we look and you can’t help but not be surprised that most musicians are technologically capable of working a program on their computer to put out an album. Of course their are a few drawbacks and the major one being the actual studio itself, which costs thousands of dollars to sound proof and build so you don’t have a shitty sound quality on you record. Apparently that is not the case anymore considering most bands have Apple computers which comes with Garage Band and if you really want to fork the money over you can pick up Final Draft.
Obviously though this seems much more logical for a band who has some album experience as well as money to invest in creating a home studio as well as the studio equipment. The last Thrice album entitled Beggars was recorded in the lead guitar players basement which he turned into a home studio. The main reason not being financial but so the band could spend time in their home town recording instead of being away for weeks at a time. I’m all for the do it yourself method for two reasons, one being that it saves the band money and allows for a quicker release to the fan and two in that the band calls the shots on how it sounds and doesn’t have to listen to a producer. That being said I suggest you check out the article on the USA Today website because it has some interesting material. The song “In Exile” by Thrice is the video above, AHHHH can’t get enough of it.
