Artist Spotlight

Back in March a few of the Ogden dudes went to go see Modest Mouse play at Terminal 5 in NYC. One of the bands who opened for them was this group called Mimicking Birds and they really caught the attention of all of us. After the show I spent the next couple days trying to find their albums but couldn’t find anything so I kind of just figured they may be new and have nothing out there. Finally I found them on myspace under the name Nate Lacy who apparantly wrote the songs and later got a band together to play them live. Luckily I checked out there myspace thoroughly and found a link to download their home recorded songs for free, all 23 of them, pretty fucking awesome I may say.

Luckily for them they got the attention of Modest Mouse singer Isaac Brock who started his own record label called Glacial Pace and signed them. Brock no stranger to talent has found bands for Sub Pop by the likes of The Shins and Wolf Parade. That being said I found out Mimicking Birds album will be out sometime in early fall.

The band’s sound is very chill and relaxing and could be compared to groups like Simon and Garfunkel and Iron and Wine. Their myspace titles are lyrical surf rock because their sound is heavily relied on strings, samples and the keyboards. Many of the songs have samples of sea gulls, waves crashing, and ships going through the harbor. I’m really into this band right now and downloaded all the free songs. Some songs I suggest downloading first are “Burning Stars”, ” Old Angry Fluke”, “Cabin Fever” and “Home and Somewhere Else”. Band is perfect for post surf sessions, lazy days on the beach and late nights after the bars. I personally can’t wait to listen to them on those cold rides home from surfing Manasquan in the winter.  Either way check out the links below to hear their songs and download some for yourself.
