For Brand New’s fourth studio effort entitled Daisy is the band’s on going approach to progressing their sound and continuing to push their talents musically. For a band that started out as a pop punk band has drastically altered their sound to something they find more fulfilling and in a recent interview Jesse Lacey stated the band has become rather selfish and really only wants to play music they find interesting and for fans to realize the old Brand New is dead. Since the release of their previous album The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me (which is probably one of my favorite albums ever) the band has been more experimental with their guitar work and lyric writing.
This album happens to be no different and from the start of the first song ”Vices” you are a little thrown off by the intro which sounds like a 30′s singer on a scratched vinyl playing. It quickly rips into a heavy and distorted song that is hard to take in at first listen but it quickly grows on you the second and third time. The first single released off the album is “At The Bottom” and easily a good listen the first time around but you can tell the difference in his singing style on this song and it’s really hard to explain in writing what he does but you can hear for yourself on the clip I leave below this blog. I can hear a lot of Sonic Youth style musicianship non this album because it’s very distorted guitar work with lyrics that kind of creep you out, in a good way. The example comes in with the song “You Stole” which is probably my favorite song off the album which has poetic style lyrics that lead into a sick guitar riff to finish off the song. I would even go as far to say that this could be one of my favorite Brand New songs and could quickly rival my praised “Jesus” track by them.
The rest of the album is solid as well with tracks like “Bought A Bride”, “Daisy” and “Noro” all keeping the listener interested throughout the album. I wouldn’t go as far to say this album is as good as it’s predecessor but I have loved what the band has done since that album and hope they continue on this path of experimenting and just doing their own thing. It’s worked out for them so far and I just hope their stupid Emo fan base appreciates the work they put into this album as well.
