It’s funny how over the years bands would break up and the singer would go on to do his own thing because he wanted to break away from the band. Singers such as Sting left The Police and Phil Collins had left Genesis because they wanted to go on and do their own thing. But really couldn’t they of just done a side project of their own? It’s obvious after several years you may enjoy other types of music that you want to branch out in but do you really need to break up a great band because your head is so fucking big?
Nowadays some of my favorite bands have many side projects from guitar players to singers deciding to put out a random album that wouldn’t really fit in the band they were in. The lead singer of Hot Water Music (Chuck Ragan) puts out folk/bluegrass albums where his punk voice is so wraspy it just works so good in that sort of atmosphere that normally wouldn’t fit on his punk bands albums. Dallas Green started his own side project entitled City And Colour where he plays really slow blues/gospel style songs where he’s in a band called Alexisonfire who screams bloody murder and rips into heavy licks on every song. These are guys who are so talented it would be a shame for them to keep these songs they write in the dark just because it won’t fit on the band’s album. That’s why guys like Phil Collins and Sting are being pushed back into these great classic bands because nobody really cares to hear their solo shit and want to hear them play with the band that launched their careers. A read an article a while back that Dave Grohl was too nervous to write some of his own songs in another band because he didn’t want it to interfere with Nirvana and just imagine if Kurt Cobain didn’t die (which would of been fantastic if he didn’t) and we never would of heard some of the great songs he wrote in the Foo Fighters. All I’m really getting at is side projects are pretty awesome and some of my favorite bands are side projects of other bands. If you already have a side project then make a side project to that side project because chances are it will sound better then the band it’s in right now. Below is one of my favorite singers and lyricists doing his side project, his name is Dustin Kensrue and he is the singer and lyric writer for Thrice.
