Pop? More like BLECCHHHH!!!!

August 20th, 2009

Originally Pop was used to describe bands who became popular during an era like the Beatles early work or even somebody as prestigous as Michael Jackson who really defined the genre into a specific type of music.  But now it seems bands are coming out and saying they are stricly a “POP” band which means they write really upbeat positive songs and really catchy music that really has no depth.  The problem is they really aren’t “Pop” per se and really more just a pop of that genre such as Blink 182 was the token band to labeled Pop Punk and that’s really all your seeing nowadays is bands riding that gravy train with biscuit wheels.

I’m talking about bands like Fall Out Boy, who yes, did bring back that style of punk but also allowed a wave of morons to replicate that sound and be signed by labels all over the country.  When Fall Out Boy goes on tour they have bands like All Time Low opening for them and if a blind person showed up late to the show and heard a band playing they would think that Fall Out Boy had already taken the stage.  Even worse is that these bands who follow have followers!!! I can’t believe bands like The Maine, Mayday Parade and Cute Is What We Aim For were even signed by labels especially for jumping on the band wagon so late.  Then to go even further into this direction you have hybrid bands that mix this pop punk garbage with dance music!!!  I’m directing this at Gabe from Cobra Starship who decided to break up his widely popular band Midtown which was receiving critic success to start a dance pop band called Cobra Starship.  “Good Girls Gone Bad” are you serious writing a song like that?  You wrote “Give It Up” with Midtown which my entire group of roommates rocked out to on a regular basis and it even got airplay on KRock radio when they played all rock music.

Here is the skinny on this scene, it’s dominated by 10-18 year old girls who are so obsessed with this teenie bop crap that they buy anything their favorite bubble gum pop band puts out.  That’s including merch, eps, full length albums, crappy neon themed tours and anything that these girls can get their hands on to paste on their lockers or bodies.  I went to Bamboozle last year and walked past the Cobra Starship stage, in front of the stage the only people who were older then 18 were the parents standing with the kids who were too young to go to the concert alone.  I felt bad for the parents sitting their listening to synth machines pumping out beats and singers talking about sobby breakups and 80′s dance parties.

But in my closing point, all power to them for taking advantage of teenage girls who cry histarically everytime they take the stage because your now loaded and all for the price of respectful music.  I hope your favorite bands spit on you at the Warped Tour and talk shit to your face while your playing music you don’t even like just to earn a cheap buck.  Music is a fragile priceless gift and you fucked it up.  Here are some cool band shots of some of the idiots I’m talking about (The last picture is Brokencyde and I don’t even need to talk about them because the picture says it all)
