The title is probably one of my favorite lines in a song as well as by one of my favorite bands Circa Survive which is the band of discussion today. I have held up talking about them because they have been in heavy writing stages for their 3rd studio album which has finally seen recording these past two weeks. The band’s first album Juturna had a huge impact on me and I was amazed on the lead singer’s (Anthony Green) vocal range which was odd but also very original at the time and it’s mostly what really drew me in at first. His lyrics were very mysterious and had a lot to do with forgetting and troubled times being conquered as if he had been saved from something. Then their musically style hit me and I was brought in by the sort of dark yet light sound they had and how they could tackle both elements in just one song. Some of my favorite songs off the album are “In Fear And Faith”, “The Great Golden Baby”, “Stop The Fucking Car” “We’re All Thieves” and “Oh, Hello.” The band’s sound was created from them all having emo style careers in their previous bands, to writing songs completely different then before and really just taking a punk sound and proging it out and using delay petals to add that trippy effect to really separate themselves. Needless to say they have taken that scene by storm and made a push to start separating themselves from it by releasing their follow up, appropriately titled On Letting Go.
The band decided to go with this title to show they were growing up as people and musically their style would evolve into what they want the band to sound like and in order to do that they needed to let go of their roots. With all respect there isn’t too much departure from this album as to the first release but you can definately notice the added effects to their guitars and their time changes. As well as adding acoustic guitars to songs and some key and synth combinations that show where the band is naturally headed. Some of the key songs on this album that I enjoy are “Living Together”, “In The Morning And Amazing”, “The Difference Between Medicine and Poison Is In The Dose”, “Kicking Your Crosses Down” and the title track “On Letting Go”. The song “Kicking Your Crosses Down” I think is the best example of where the band is heading and I feel from what I’ve read on their blogs they are going for that more psychedelic feel in the spirit of The Doors and Pink Floyd since they are dropping those names consistently as influences now.
While in the process of writing this album they mentioned Anthony Green the lead singer would take on the role of some guitar and keys to really emphasize the transformation of the band. And as all bands become increasingly popular the presence of major labels knocking at their doors has become evident and the band decided to go with Atlantic Records because of the deal they would have complete artistic freedom to write however they wanted and no influence to change their sound. Either way I am very excited to see what is to come from Circa Survive this coming fall when they release their currently untitled third studio album. I hope some of you really give yourself the chance to enjoy this band as much as I have and give them a chance because it may be tough on first listen to grasp. Also I’ve included below their myspace page to listen to their songs and I clip of them covering Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here”.
