Vinyl Strikes Back!!!!

I have been collecting classic albums on vinyl for years just because I thought it was cool to hold on to a piece of history in music, considering it was the method of selling music for several decades.  However in the early 90′s records companies stopped selling vinyl because of the huge growth in CD and Cassette sales.  Many people adapted and forgot about their vinyl and just replaced them with cd’s which were smaller and had great sound quality.  Their was a movement though, especially in the independent music scene that continued to produce albums on vinyl by their artists and today many of these albums are worth money.  I would love to get my hands on a Nirvana-Nevermind or Modest Mouse- Lonesome Crowded West vinyl but they were limited edition prints by the indie labels they were on who were keeping vinyl alive and now whoever has them is selling them for a hundred to two hundred bucks a pop.

It seems weird that now vinyl is making such a huge return and that people are actually able to sell these albums for this much especially when nobody really owns a record player anymore.  But what you don’t see is that since the early 2000 years MP3 has been dominating and destroying the music industry as far as CD sales go.  What the major labels are doing is taking a nod from the Indie labels and producing many bands albums on vinyl again for the sheer fact of collection.  A vinyl album to many people is a piece of art and it’s just something that’s cool to have, it’s big, it’s vintage, it’s sometimes pressed on odd coloring to have a limited edition effect and it’s smart because it comes with a fucking code to download the album in MP3 form for your iPOD now.  I have started to buy many of my favorite new bands on vinyl for this reason.  I get the album anyway on my iPOD and I get to show off my sick new and classic vinyl collection.  It’s amazing how sometimes technology can reverse itself by being too advanced and I’m all for seeing the new Modest Mouse EP coming out on vinyl in Best Buy this August and can’t wait to pick it up.  Jump on the bandwagon and start picking up some of your new favorites on vinyl, the sales figures don’t lie, it’s no fad.
