Album Review

July 28th, 2009

If you hadn’t noticed I’ve been only really doing reviews of albums I’ve picked up that I’ve enjoyed so if I haven’t written about it then Iprobably didn’t care for it.  Can’t say that about the new Portugal The Man album which doesn’t surprise me considering I enjoyed their last album entitled Censored Colors.  I didn’t really care too much for their earlier work but they have really grown into their own with this new album The Satantic Satanist which I am certain will blow them up.

The band has a great sound of their own, it’s sort of a classic rock vibe of The Doors, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin mixed with some minor funk and modern Indie Rock.  Although they are entirely their own sound but it’s really the only way to describe them because the lead singer kills it vocally and the music is just so original.  The album opener “People Say” is sort of a Beatles style pop song with a great chorus and musicianship throughout the song.  Their psychedelic funk sound comes in with the song “Lovers In Love” which sounds like it could be played on classic rock stations and fool everyone that it’s a new band.

Every song is different which is why a lot of people like this band and most songs are very feel good and make you want to be out in the sun and around people.  Some other great songs midway include “Guns & Dogs” as well as “Everyone Is Golden” just to name a couple so I don’t get carried away naming every song on the album.  The second song I named is super poppy with a great psychedelic keyboard backing the song and you can’t help but sing “Everyone is golden” once the chorus hits.  The album ends with the song  “Mornings” which compliments the album’s theme as well as be probably one of the best songs on the entire album.  Their is something very chill and calming about the song that makes you want to just sleep on the beach or watch a sunset (being a little biased towards the beach since I listened to this on the beach today).

Either way the band is pretty cool stuff especially being from the middle of nowhere Alaska.  If their is any band to jump on the bandwagon with in case you missed the Kings of Leon one, I would suggest picking up this album and the previous one before this to get a taste.  I already know this album is getting rave reviews and being played all over Fuel TV and recently made some appearances on MTV’s Indie Countdowns as well.  Check out the video of them performing on Fuel’s cool tv show The Daily Habit below.
